A Study on Maternal and Child Health in an Urban Slum Area

Abstract
The findings were obtained through the maternal and child health status survey, conducted by the authors with a total of 901 women and infants-who had registered at the MCH center in the slum area, Sanggye-dong, Seoul, during the period from May, 1968 to July. 1969.
As the result of this study, the following conclusions were obtained.
1. In the cases of respondents repuesting prenatal care, 24.9% were currently pregnant and the rest had completed pregnancy. On an age group basis, of those reporting current pregnancy, 54.1 percent were of the 25-29 age group, 37.5 percent were under 24 and 8.4 percent were aged 39 or more.
2. The proportion of women requesting prenatal care who reported that they had experienced at least one induced abortion was relatively small (37.8%) as compared with the respondents requesting family planning (50.7%). On an age group basis, those reporting induced abortion rated 11.8 percent of the under 24 age group, 30.4 percent of 25~29 age group, 55.6 percent of the 30¡­34 age group and 64.7 percent among those aged 35 or more. Thus, the percentage experiencing induced abortion increased with age. The proportion of women requesting family planning reported on an age group basis, was 38.7 percent of the under 24 age group, 37.8 percent of the 25¡­29 age group, 53.1 percent of 30¡­34 age proup and 62.3 percent among those aged 35 or more.
3. In regard to the place of delivery, only 14.3% had used a hospital, whereas 85.7% had given birth at home. There is no significant difference by age, but hospital delivery was higher among women of a higher educational level.
4. Deliveries attended by a doctor, midwife, and other in 62.2 percent of total deliveries, were 14.3 percent, 26.6 percent and 21.4% respectively, in respondents requesting prenatal care. The women who requested child health care reported that 31.8 percent of all deliveries were attended by doctors, 22.7 percent of all deliveries were attended by midwives and 45.5 percent of all deliveries were attended by other people. Those women in the younger age group and of a higher educational level had a higher percentage intended by doctors or midwives.
5. The percent of mothers receiving prenatal care was 42.9% once, 21.4% twice, and 25.7 percent three times or more. A higher proportion of the women in the lower age group and with higher education received prenatal care.
6. Breastfed children were most frequent (66.6%), 25.2 percent of the mothers used both breastfeeding and cow milk, and 8.4 percent used only cow milk. By infant age, the lower the age the more frequent were the children breastfed.
7. The rate of receiving immunizations was 42.0% in the infants. By infant age, 23.2% of the children aged under 3 months were immunized, 34.4% aged 4-6 months, 50.0% aged 7-12 months. and 56.2% aged 13 months or more. The higher the educational level of mothers the more frequent the immunizations were.
8. The experience of diseases during the infant age rated 31.1% in respondents requesting child health care, and the diseases included measles (62.9%). By infant age, 9.6% (under 3 mos.), 14.5% (4-6 mos.) 24.1% (7-12 mos.) and 51.8% (13 months or more) had experienced disease.
9. The rate of receiving child health care was 53.5% 1-2 times, 26.9% 3-4 times, 10.9% 5-6 times and 8.7% 7 or more times in those children 13 months of age or over.
10. Those women requesting family planning who were currently practicing a method of contraception rate 69.3% while those having practiced in the past were 64.0%.
Of all the methods of contraception adopted by the respondents, loop comprised 27.5% currently and 1.5% in the past.
The rate currently practicing by age were 59.5% in 25-29 age group, 77.6% in 30-34 age group, and 74.1% in 35-39 age group.
11. The proportion of mothers practicing who had finished primary school was 70%, of those finishing middle school, 71.6%, and of those finishing high school or more, 68.5%.
12. By number of living children, those requesting family planning with less than 2 children were 58.5%,75.1% with 3-5 children and 76.3% with 5 children or more.
13. Copen intervals (Internal from date of last mensis to data of visit to MCH Center) by respondent¢¥s current age were 24.6% in less than 3 months, 20.5% in 4-7 months, 9.9% in 8-15 months and 13.1% in 16 months and more.
